INNA DE YARD

The Inna de Yard's story is linked to the MAKASOUND record label, here is how it started…

The Makasound Record Label

In 1998, two young French friends, Romain Germa and Nicolas Maslowski work for the site ‘Soundicate.com’ (web radio & magazine). They interview Reggae artists and get in touch with Winston McAnuff. It is the start of a never ending friendship between them. They are invited in Jamaica to make many interviews… but their ‘Soundicate’ adventure stops in 2001.

Romain and Nicolas are Reggae lovers and vinyl collectors. They wish to unveil and reissue rare old ‘killer’ albums and to release some obscure recordings made by unknown Reggae artists. They love roots Reggae above all, so they first want to publish ‘big music’ that has been recorded prior to 1984, before the digital age of Reggae.
They would like to produce an album by Winston McAnuff. They try to find a record company that would agree to work with them on this project, but all the ones they contact disagree by arguing ‘he’s not famous’ or ‘he’s too old’ and so on… but they won’t give up the fight !

By late 2001, they launch an independant record label called ‘Makasound’.

 © Makasound

Here is their slogan: “in Jamaican patois, maka means thorny, spicy. Makasound is a label that proposes to release or to update the thorny, spicy, sharp albums of roots Reggae, it means albums that hurt. Whether they have already been edited or not, Makasound will release them. Most of the time, it will involve entire albums forgotten in the labyrinth  of Jamaican music. Makasound wants to revive the honor that is due to this music”.

 Romain Germa and Nicolas Paslowski

Their first release then is Winston McAnuff’s album: ‘Diary Of The Silent Years 1977-2000’ that comes out in March 2002 (see Winston McAnuff discography for more information).
It is released on both LP and CD format, like most of the following Makasound albums will be. The label strives to highlight artists, which is rare in the Reggae production: that is to put his face on the cover, his biography and / or an interview in the booklet, more generally the lyrics of the songs. It is really about restoring a whole Reggae heritage and pushing it.

Finally, Romain and Nicolas succeed well in releasing many ‘killer’ roots Reggae albums !

Here are some artist names from their original catalog: Knowledge, Hugh MundellL,Delroy Williams, Bunny Lee’s productions, The Meditations, Derrick Harriot, Winston McAnuff, The Mighty Three’s, Alton Ellis, Linval Thompson, Merger, The Rastafarians, Black Roots, Leroy Brown, Leroy Smart etc…
From 2002 until 2010, they produce singles records, EP’s as well as many more albums. They also launch some other collections linked to the original Makasound label:

‘Inna deYard’ : the most famous one, detailed in the next chapter: various artists
                         acoustic live sessions,

‘Makafresh: Jamaican music, new releases by established artists and new talents:
Linval Thompson, Kiddus I, Clive Hunt, Omar Perry, Steve Newland,
Takana Zion, Bishob & Manjul, Doniki, Clinton Fearon, etc…

‘Black Eye: an ‘experimental’ label: new albums by Winston Mc Anuff, R.Wan, Java,
                     Lëk Sèn, Sig, Curumin etc…

For almost 10 years, more than 70 albums have been released by the label in its different collections. Makasound did a great job in Reggae production: most albums are jewels !
It is possible to see more details about all those products on the original internet site, it is still reachable at: www.Makasound.com

By late 2000s, despite a struggle to keep on producing quality recordings, the times are tough for the music industry, not to say merciless towards small enthusiastic structures like Makasound. Unfortunately, the managers experience financial problems and sadly, in early 2011, the label has to stop definitively its activities.

Here is the message left on the internet site by Romain and Nicolas February 14th 2011:
“As you may already know, our label Makasound closes its doors. We have not managed to pass the winter, strangled by increasingly large debts, and undermined by an economy of music production that deteriorates each year a little more for multiple reasons. See the tribune that we published in Liberation (French newspaper) and which generated many reactions.

Thus the activity of the label stops by legal obligation, and the discs are no longer purchasable on our site. A liquidator has been appointed to settle the accounting and legal position of the company.
We are, of course, deeply sad to have reached this point, and not to be able to continue this great adventure. We would like to thank all the artists and producers with whom we enjoyed so much "working", we thank the media who have given us space to our productions and our talented artists, and of course we thank the public who often supported us during the course of these 9 years by strong sympathetic encouragement.

Not forgetting those who have worked on our side, often in precarious conditions ...: Marine, Aurélien, Cyril, Chloé, Bastien, Audrey, Samuel, Tristan, Carole, Suzanne, Manon, Antoine.
Hope to find the courage and partners to go back or continue otherwise this adventure of enthusiasts…
… As Winston McAnuff would say, "Sky is the limit! ". Let's seek optimism and do not cry over the past”

Back in 2001/2002s: Winston McAnuff introduces the Makasound founders to Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith and other artists. "It was magic" recalls Nicolas Maslowski. “he introduced us to all the artists that we wanted to meet. And then on the way, he made us listen to another album he'd never released”.
Winston becomes their ambassador in Jamaica while they enable him to relaunch his musical career in France. Then, from 2001, Romain and Nicolas are going to Jamaica three to five times a year to meet Reggae artists and to do recordings with them.

In a 2007 interview, Nicolas Maslowski recalls about the origin of the Inna deYard project: "The idea of the Inna deYard collection came to me in Paris, thinking about how to produce albums at reduced cost. The album production was expensive, and we could not afford it. We also wanted to produce acoustic albums, so the Inna de Yard project matched well. Initially, the idea was to go from yard to yard, with every singer who would have joined the project. Then I exposed the project to Winston to see what he thought about it. That's how he directed me to Earl Chinna Smith, telling me that the ideal would be to do it at his house, as he has a basic home studio that should fit well.

A few months later, we were in Jamaica to record some overdubs for Winston's album with Camille Bazbaz, "A Drop". Earl Chinna was in the Harry J studio to add some guitars parts.
I explained the idea to him. Within five minutes he got excited !”

Chinna was already doing the same kind of things all the time, he instantly enjoys the project and says "let's record it !" Nicolas then asks him to sing too, so he answers back: "no man",  adding: "yeh, I'll sing some tunes, but then, all  my bredren in here will  have to sing a song or two". Kiddus I is there too, he immediately gets involved in the project, enjoying what Chinna calls “a natural vibes in a little quiet space in Jamaica”

Inna de Yard series present songs such as they are born, in all simplicity, in the Jamaican court yards, back yards. A voice, a guitar, most of the times backed up by nyabinghi drums, sometimes some choruses, according to the present vibrations. It is a return to the roots of Reggae, as it sprang from the Jamaican yards in the late 60’s and early 70’s.

Later on, Nicolas proposes to some of Chinna’s famous pals to be part in the project: the Viceroys, the Congos, Junior Murvin (RIP), Linval Thompson, the Mighty Diamonds and Ras Michael Jnr. Other singers and players of instruments come along and record one or two songs: Matthew McAnuff, (RIP), Derajah, Prince Alla, Israel Voice, Ken Bob, Emmanuel I, Ade Culture: the first ‘Inna deYard’ acoustic experience is born! It will last almost 10 years, from the first meetings in 2002, until 2012 (lately, under the name ‘Inna deYard All Stars’).

With the stop of the Makasound business, one could have thought that consequently the Inna de Yard story would be over… but the two ex-Makasound activists did not stay long without being creative again ! In April 2011, they launch another label called Chapter Two Records. This one is part of the major company Wagram Music S.A.S. and brings together artists from various universes: French Song, World Music, Reggae, etc… The new albums they produce are performed by the following artists:Tom Fire, Derajah & Donkey Jaw Bone, Zoufris Maracas, R. Wan, Clinton Fearon, Lëk Sèn, Winston McAnuff & Fixi, Matthew McAnuff (RIP), Soviet Suprem, Cheikh Lô… (some names sound familiar)…
 © Sébastien Carayol

In 2016, a new project is on its way: that is the comeback of Inna de Yard !
Once again, it finds its source in France: Sébastien Carayol is a journalist and curator of an upcoming exhibition on Jamaican music, the biggest ever to be realised in Europe.

It is called ‘Jamaica, Jamaica !’ and it will happen at the ‘Cité de la Musique-Philharmonie de Paris’, a huge music-oriented cultural centre, unique in the world (home to several concert halls, a museum, a media library and educational spaces).

Sébastien plans this major event: a five months exhibition that will start in early April 2017.

The ‘Cité de la Musique’ crew also intends to organize a whole week-end of concerts and to invite some Jamaican artists. They particularly wish to reveal the roots of Reggae music. Then the exhibition turns out to be the perfect opportunity for Chapter Two to kickstart Inna de Yard again and to reconnect with the most tasty Jamaican musical experiences.

  © Beth Lesser
Once the contacts with Jamaican musicians are established, some of them agree to re-unite and to start the experience again: Winston McAnuff, Kiddus I, Cedric Myton, Kush McAnuff, Derajah, the Viceroys, Eric ‘Bongo Joe’ McDonald, Alphonso ‘Fonso’ Craig... Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith, for personnal reason, does not want to join them this time.

Many other elder or younger talented artists are therefore approached: Ken Boothe, Lloyd Parks, Robbie Lyn, Steve Newlands (from Roots Underground), Winston “Bo-Pee” Bowen’s, Var (from Pentateuch Movement), Ruel ‘Pot A Rice’ Ashburn, Ronald 'Nambo' Robinson (RIP)
and more singers & musicians are enthusiastic and adhere to the project. They become members of Inna de Yard’s second wave. And last but not least, another side of this scheme turns out to be an album project called ‘the Soul of Jamaica’ ! Then, in June 2016, all of them gather on the veranda of a house located in the Kingston’s hills, in Stony Hill. In just 4 days, they record 22 tracks ! A feat made possible only because all artists involved are some of the best in Jamaica, most professional singers and musicians there are to date ! The results of those 'live and direct' open-air sessions are available on 7 promotional videos, two EP’s and a magnificent 13 tracks album which sounds as one of the best roots Reggae albums ever ! It came out on April 10th.
Some songs recorded during these sessions have not been included in the first version of the album: 4 new tracks have been released on ‘The Soul of Jamaica’ new edition that came out September 29th. On April 22nd Inna de Yard played a fantastic show in Paris and then from June, did another successful tour including venues at the biggest European Summer festivals… Once again, the Inna De Yard crew gives us a great time in 2017 !!! awesome !!!

The skilled guitarist started his career in the 70’s, recording at Channel One, and soon developed into one of the most sought-after musicians of the island. He recorded and performed next to well-known bands and artists such as Dean Fraser, 809 Band, Firehouse Crew, Lloyd Parks and We The People, Uprising Roots and Inna De Yard, touring with the likes of Dennis Brown, Ziggy Marley and Luciano. "He was a beautiful person, always caring about one another. Very serious in music, very serious in life, always smiling and laughing. He was a hugely gifted and talented musician, with a very particular touch and feeling. He brought so much to Jamaican Reggae, to Inna de Yard, to the music in general. We all miss you hard ‘Bo’, you will rest among us forever. May you rest in peace." (Inna De Yard, Facebook) His musical legacy will live on. Bo-Pee's most recent activities included recording the Havana Meets Kingston project with whom he was on tour in 2017. He was also on tour with Inna de Yard. One of his songs has been released as a single called ‘Give Thanks and Praise’  on the Inna De Yard album The Soul Of Jamaica in 2017. He played lead guitar on all tracks of the second edition of Inna De Yard on Chapter Two Records, that came out shortly after his death.

Album review & bio by DAVID KATZ (author of People Funny Boy: The Genius of Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and Solid Foundation: An Oral History of Reggae) -

Inna De Yard is back, with their best album yet! Following a long hiatus triggered by the pandemic, the much-loved acoustic reggae project makes a triumphant return with another heart-warming set of unplugged classics, titled Family Affair.

To fully understand the latest iteration of the project, let’s remind ourselves of the inspiration behind the series: Inna De Yard has always sought to capture the essence of Jamaican popular music by stripping reggae down to its core essentials. Through recording some of the music’s greatest singer-songwriters in a naturalistic setting, unencumbered by electronic instruments and contemporary studio technology, the project pays homage to the informal jam sessions that gave birth to reggae in the ‘yards’ of Kingston – that is, the communal outdoor spaces shared between families in the ghetto – like the famous ‘government yard’ in Trench Town where Bob Marley and the Wailers learned their craft.

Family Affair continues that tradition, and we consider this new album to be the finest Inna De Yard episode. Although the bigger stars like Ken Boothe and Horace Andy who passed through the Yard are absent, the new album evidences the skills of project’s longstanding vocalists as well as its new editions, the musicians displaying uncommon virtuosity with their instruments and the track listing allowing the group to explore some vintage reggae in their own inimitable fashion. As Inna De Yard continues its meandering journey, it demonstrates that the roots are still growing as the project becomes stronger and stronger.

The 13 songs that comprise Family Affair were recorded in just four days in the open air beneath the majestic Blue Mountains, joining stalwarts Cedric Myton, Kiddus I and Winston McAnuff with the legendary rock steady duo Keith and Tex and the equally illustrious Johnny Osbourne, the younger generation represented by Steve Newland of Rootz Underground, melodious chanter Derajah, and Winston McAnuff’s son Kush. Anchored by the pulsating rhythms of traditional nyabinghi drumming, Family Affair has a pervasive feel of jazz in its musical accompaniment as provided by some of Jamaica’s top session musicians, including guitarist Dwight Pinkney of the Roots Radics, veteran keyboardist Franklyn ‘Bubbler’ Waul, bassist Delroy ‘Wormbass’ Nevin, flutist Donaldson Bernard, Ziggy Marley’s trombonist Everald Gayle and guest saxophonist Dean Fraser, all expertly arranged by French saxophonist Guillaume ‘Stepper’ Briard, a longstanding collaborator of Sly and Robbie. The resulting sound is warm, welcoming, and intimate, emphasising the close camaraderie of Inna De Yard and the organic nature in which they work.

Inna De Yard was conceived in the early 2000s as a means of taking reggae back to its acoustic roots. Through informal jams sessions held in the front yard of guitarist Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith’s home in Kingston, a series of acoustic albums was cut with revered figures such as Junior Murvin, the Viceroys, Linval Thompson, and the Mighty Diamonds, together with upcoming artists mentored by Smith. The project was revived in 2017 for the acclaimed album The Soul of Jamaica, the collective’s live performance at the Philharmonie de Paris forming the centrepiece of events held at Cite de la Musique to complement the Jamaica Jamaica! exhibition; the self-titled 2019 follow-up and Soul of Jamaica documentary film maintained the project’s integrity, the group playing nearly 100 shows at venues and festivals across the globe in support of the work, the documentary screening in 30 countries.

Since the release of the last album, the Inna De Yard family suffered some losses, most notably in the passing of guitarist Bo Pee Bowen, trombonist Nambo Robinson, and Wesley Tinglin and Neville Ingram of the Viceroys; Covid restrictions saw the Jamaican music industry grind to a halt after the island was hit by high numbers. Thankfully, now that the pandemic has finally waned and Jamaica has begun its recovery, the collective felt it was high time to create a new album, stepping up to the plate to deliver new interpretations of some of reggae’s most inspiring musical gems.

On opener ‘Humanity,’ former Congos leader Cedric Myton adapts one of the best-known works of his comrade, Prince Lincoln of the Royal Rasses; Cedric also revisits the ominous ‘Days Chasing Days,’ which the Congos recorded in 1980 for CBS France, while Kiddus I reworks the foreboding ‘Fire Burn,’ which he first recorded in the mid-1970s. ‘Tonight’ and ‘Stop That Train’ were two of Keith and Tex’s most popular hits in rock steady, and here the duo give them a contemporary makeover; ‘Down The Street’ is a lesser-known beauty they first recorded in 1968 for Derrick Harriott, and the solo hit Rowe recorded for Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, ‘Groovy Situation,’ is here delivered sensual and languorous. Randy Newman’s forlorn ‘Baltimore’ became a hit for the Tamlins after they adapted Nina Simone’s soulful jazz rendition; here the perennial favourite is given a powerful Inna De Yard treatment, courtesy of Johnny Osborne and Winston McAnuff. Osbourne also offers a beautiful remake of his Studio One signature tune, ‘Truth And Rights,’ and McAnuff revisits his meditative love song, ‘Sun Is Setting In The Sea’; Steve Newland tackles Bob Marley’s ‘Touch Me,’ Derajah updates the Gaylads’ ‘Africa’ and Kush McAnuff offers Rastafari counsel on ‘Come Away,’ adapting a rare song recorded by the Black Survivors for producer Jack Ruby in 1975.

The album’s debut single aims for the crowd-pleasers, comprising ‘Down The Street,’ ‘Baltimore,’ ‘Humanity’ and ‘Tonight,’ but in truth every song’s a winner here. Indeed, Family Affair shows Inna De Yard to be in fine health, as distinctive, innovative, and relevant as when the project first began. Tune in and be humbled!

July 2023: Three new extra (digital) bonus tracks are available :

Chapter Two Records has released three new songs by members of the Inna De Yard collective. These tracks, recorded in December in Kingston, were not included on the group’s recent album, Family Affair, making them bonus tracks. Among the songs is Johnny Osbourne’s powerful and mystical Nyah Man, a new version of his 1972 released Techniques single that was produced by Winston Riley. Cedric Myton’s Freedom Fighters is another track and has been previously featured on the Freedom Fighters EP released earlier this year. Lastly, Kiddus I surprises listeners with a ska piece called Squidley Didley.

!!!
While on tour in Sweden the Inna de Yard crew have had an opportunity to go in the 'See & Hear' studios in Uppsala.
They could jam with local musicians and singers. It has been a time for 'Inna de Studio' sessions.
As a result, two main songs plus instrumental plus dub versions were recorded and finalised on a Cd.
This finally could not come out on vinyl, as it was planned, unfortunately.

Those are excellent songs by an electrified Inna de Studio ! Enjoy !

On this video, we can see the Maestro, Chinna, showing Swedish musicians the way to play the basic lines.
